DRV8214: Overvoltage due to significant variations in the motor.

Part Number: DRV8214

Tool/software:

Hi,

We encountered major overvoltage problems with the use of a DRV8214 in an RC car. I should point out that there is only one power source for the whole thing.

This overvoltage going up from the motor VM to the rest of the circuits ended up damaging them, despite several filter capacitors on the whole thing and particularly on the 3v3 regulator (it was the one that ended up blowing and also let the overvoltage pass to the CPU, burning it with it).

We analyzed the phenomenon and concluded that one or more protections are still missing at the output of the DRV8214. Attached is a diagram, where in red the additional protection needed to avoid this problem. We also thought about protection with a TVS diode on the entire power supply and perhaps also in addition to the motor. T

Thank you in advance to all for your comments and observations.

Best Regards.

Yves
