DRV8334: Determining the right TDrive setting + IHOLD_SEL use cases

Part Number: DRV8334

Tool/software:

Hello,

I'm working on a tuning guide for my team's internal use. For some context, we are not at present using predischarge or deadtime injection (I mention these things solely as they adjust the functionality of the DRV8334 slightly)

Looking at Figure 7-6 in the datasheet, TDrive seems to be quite exaggerated, far longer than the actual switching time. Is this typical guidance? I was thinking that it might be best to use the actual MOSFET switching time measured, add some buffer for worst-case tolerancing (e.g., max MOSFET gate charge from the datasheet), and add 20% (given -20% is the min tolerancing for the TDRIVE state machine's timing accuracy for any given setting, per the datasheet).

Additionally, I am wondering when it might make sense to not set IHOLD_SEL. The idea that I can further reduce the risk of crosstalk from adjacent phases (given my understanding that ISTRONG is only applied to the MOSFET on the same phase when its complementary FET is being turned on) turning on/off my FET is great, but what's the catch? What considerations should I have in mind when making that decision?
