The value for the trip current if there is no sense resistor (Sense pin directly connected to ground) is 2.8A, this is the max current value.
The trip current value can be lowered through the Rsense resistor. This sense resistor is additional to the overcurrent and can be set to limit the current to the motor.
The 3A is the overcurrent level at which the device will report an overcurrent fault.
The I_trip current can be adjusted using formula in section 10.2.2.3 of the DRV8801 datasheet:
R_sense = 0.5V/ I_trip
