By the way, there is another device that may work for your application. Please take a look at the DRV8881E, which has integrated FETs. This device can drive up to 2.5A peak (1.4A RMS) and high levels of microstepping.
It requires some two voltage references, and extra band from the micro to operate. The DRV8881EEVM is available for evaluation if interested.
