I am glad to hear you have the GUI working. If you are trying to detect stall conditions, the DRV8711 has the ability to do so.
An alternative is using a limit switch (hall or optical sensor, or mechanical switch). This is used in 3D printers ( www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00405 ) to detect the home position. The motor can move to home upon power up and be set to a maximum number of steps.
