Motor Driver and Controller for a reciprocating linear motor

I am a mechanical engineer working for Survice Engineering as a contractor at the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, MD. My reason for contacting TI is that I am trying to find a motor driver/controller for a reciprocating linear motor. The motor acts to compress a gas in a cryocooler. The cryocooler was bought on ebay as part of an RF (Radio Frequency) filter that was used by the cellphone industry. The filter comes with a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) circuit board that I am unable to adapt to our purpose. The filter unit runs on the telephone industry standard of 27 volts DC. The input filter voltage range is 22.5 to 30 VDC. When we run the unit, the DC power supply reports a max amperage of approximately 5 Amps. If we disconnect the cryocooler from the DSP we can drive it using a single phase variac. This AC source is limited to 10 Amps by a fuse. At approximately 9 amps we are at 13 Volts True RMS.

The DC motor driver is using some type of PWM to control the power and maiintain temperature in a control loop. I need advice as to what to purchase. We would like to purchase a development board. The control loop would use a temperature output either reading voltage or resistance to control the cryocooler power to maintain temperature.

What should I be looking at to drive this motor. Either AC variac of DC power supply would be fine.

Daniel
