Hi Kevin, It is not recommended to place the outputs in a diode-ORed solution. For 40mA, there are many 5V regulators available. One example is the LP2981-50.

We used B2100-13-F diodes. The anode was connected directly to ground and the cathode was connected directly to the gate of the FETs. Six diodes were used in total, one per motor driver FET.
