RE: CCS/DRV8841: DRV8841 unexpected fault

Hi Vasco,

Some motors have capacitors inside the housing. An internal capacitor would account for the transient you are seeing. Is this the case?

Can you provide a scope capture of the current transient and nFAULT asserting zoomed in?

If there is an internal capacitor, adding additional resistance or inductance from the DRV8841 to the motor can reduce the current transient allowing the motor to operate.

CCS/DRV8841: DRV8841 unexpected fault

Part Number: DRV8841

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello, I found a recent forum thread with a similar topic but I want to be more precise, and possibly i would like to receive more precise response.

Recently we designed a control card with TMS320F28055 and DRV8841, and we made some simple tests driving a brushed geared DC 24V motor. The objective is power regulation with PWM to the motor, which can rotate in any direction (clockwise or counterclockwise). The motor drain , when rotates with no mechanical resistance appied to motor shaft,  is about 500 mA.

DRV8841 has two kind of current limit: one is programmable and the other is fixed at 3 Ampere, to protect the driver itself.  The motor is connected to AOUT1 , AOUT2 as in fig. 5 of your datasheet. No other reactive element (inductor or capacitor) between driver outputs and motor.

With no means of current limitation the driver goes immediately to fault state after the driver is programmed out of reset. using another device to switch motor on/off, a simple MOSFET switch, we measured at motor startup a short transient with current which actually goes above 3 Ampere for a very short period.

the internal current limitation is with a 0.22 sensing resistor with 3.3V reference, thus with a 3 Ampere full scale chopping current. We did not put any capacitor in parallel to sensing resistor. The chopping current (from datasheet) can be programmed at 0%  , 38%, 71% and 100% of full scale. I have tried bringing DRV8841 out of reset with AI1, AI2 at various settings, but the result is always driver fault.  Only putting a small 2.2 Ohm resistor in series to the motor solves the problem.

So the questions: what is wrong?  I expected that the programmable current limitation could overcome the fixed current protection, why not? How can i solve the problem?

Thanks, Vasco

DRV120: PWM Frequency setting not working

Part Number: DRV120

I have a similar problem as in earlier post on this forum:  "DRV120 ROSC resistor change" (e2e.ti.com/support/applications/motor_drivers/f/38/t/529326 ), Unfortunately the discussion turns private in the end so there is no solution available...

Anyway, I'm driving a 24V 100mH solenoid that requires 170mA start current and 85mA hold current with DRV120 but I can't get it working so that it wouldn't sound very annoying. I have tried multiple different resistor values for all the peak, hold and osc settings without getting it work properly. Sometimes the PWM turns very unstable and sometimes it's a lot lower than it is supposed to be. For example with 180k Rosc the frequency should be according to datasheet over 22kHz but it actually is when measured 10,5kHz (Other settings Rhold 68k and Rpeak 68k).

Any idea what is causing this?

DRV8432: DRV8432 driving 2 TEC: Output duty cycle is limited in a very low level

Part Number: DRV8432

Hi TI experts,

We are using DRV8432 to drive 2 TECs seperately, which supports both heating and cooling.  In our design, DRV8432 is set in mode 1(M1=M2=M3=0), dual full bridges with cycle-by-cycle current limit.

At first, it works so fine. Cooling/Heating power is controlled by the duty cycle of PWM input to DRV8432.

But somehow, in one of my board, the duty cylcle of OUT_X is fixed at a very low value (about 10%), no matter how we changed the PWM input duty cycle. And if the duty cycle is zero(PWM_X = low), the OUT_X will be low. This means DRV8432 is working. But the output duty cycle is limited in a very low level.

And the OTW and FAULY are still high, which means device is under normal operation.

Do you have any idear about this?

Thanks.

BR,

Jon

Hello Lucas,

In 6x PWM, you apply 6 different PWM signals to each of the 6 inputs (INHx/INLx), the output follows the truth table for the applied signal.

Thanks,

Matt

Hello!

I am seeking clarification on the 6x PWM operation. Looking at the truth table for 6x PWM (Table 3 in datasheet), it only depicts logic states without addressing PWM signals as Table 5 does for 1x PWM. Would I still send PWM to the INHX/INLX pins for variable speed operation or am I missing something?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply...

>> How long do you run the motor prior to this problem appearing?
-- I ran the motor for not more than 5 mins in oen loop. I have a regulated power suly in which i have limited the current to least than 1 A.

>>What is the motor operation profile?
-- Right now I am running the motor in one direction continously. I have tried running the motor with both 6-step and sinusoidal commutation.

>> How many devices have been damaged?
--I have damaged 4 divices till now with the same issue in all. I have made all the connection on a bread board, I am not sure if that would cause this issue... please let me know what your opinion about that.

>> What is the PVDD voltage are you using?
--I have set the PVDD voltage to 15 v and limited the current to less than 1 A. I have also attached using thermal paste a heat sink to the IC.

>>Are you adhering to the requirements of section 9.2.1.2.2 Current Requirement of 12 V Power Supply?
-- I am using a regulated power supply to rovide GVDD and PVDD. For GVDD my power supply is can provide the required current in a situation when the device is operating at higher temeratures. So, Yes I believe I am this requirement.

I am develoing an this application for a aero grade product, cost and device footprint is of utmost importance for it. I really want to use this device as it good for both the requirement. If I am able to resolve this issue it would surely find its application for other products too. please help and suggest me how to resolve this issue

Thanks again for your support

DRV8308: Drive DC motor with DRV8308

Part Number: DRV8308

I want to drive DC motors as well as BLDC motors using DRV8308. So I thought in case of DC motor - I can apply to UHP, VHP, WHP inputs certain states in order to make it behave as a regular full bridge for DC motors.

Am I right? It would work?
